Here is a collection of questions shared from families expecting little ones. If you have filled out a question card anonymously this is where answers and resources for information will be found.
If your waters break, or if you think your waters may have broken, give the midwives a call. You can expect questions about the following which may be summarized by this acronym T.A.C.O
T. Time: what time did your waters break
A. Amount: How much fluid came out? Was it a big gush, or a small trickle? Is it continuing to come out when you move?
C. Color: What color is your fluid. Amniotic fluid is clear or may have a murky white tone to it. In about 12% of births babies will have had their first bowel movement before they are born, and when this happens the fluid may have a tinge of brownish-yellow, all the way to thick, green fluid.
0. Odor: What does it smell like? This is the easiest way to determine the difference between amniotic fluid and urine. In addition, amniotic fluid doesn't have a strong scent. Strong odors may be an indication of something else going on, such as infection.
The midwives will also ask about your group B Strep status.
Following these conversations you will make a plan with the midwives for next steps.
Put on a Depends and a pad, or a white cotton washcloth to catch the fluid if you would like the midwives to test it.
Whatever you would like. Some moms like to have a dress or gown. Others will choose a sports bra or bikini. Others will opt out of clothing all together. Wear whatever you are comfortable in for labor. You may choose to bring multiple outfits.
Leading up to your baby's birth we can take steps to check if your baby is in a head down position. Feeling your belly can give the midwives a good idea of how your baby is sitting, but there are a couple tools that can be used to confirm. During a prenatal appointment this can be checked quickly by ultrasound, or a vaginal exam. During a vaginal exam the midwives are feeling to see if they can feel a head, as opposed to a squishy baby bum.
